Student Spotlight: Rachel Martel

Area of Employment: IT Helpdesk

Class Year: 2018

Why Did You Choose to Work With the IT Department?
I was assigned to the Helpdesk for work study my freshman year. I was terrified and didn’t know much about technology, but thanks to great staff and peers, I quickly learned the ropes. To this day I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity, it has helped me in more ways than I thought possible!

What is Your Role in the IT Department?
I work at the IT Helpdesk, a place where faculty, staff and students can receive help and assistance with a variety of technical issues. I assist with simple tasks such as resetting passwords and unlocking accounts, but also troubleshoot larger issues such as classroom malfunctions and other connection issues throughout campus.

Technological Advice To Our Community
Computers, phones and tablets are incredible tools that (for the most part) make our lives a lot easier. They may seem vast and magical but they are nothing to be scared of! My advice to become a confident user is to be willing to learn as much as you can about your machine or device. You might be surprised with what you learn!

What’s Your Best Technology Time-Saving Shortcut Or Life Hack?
I like to think that I am a patient person, but when it comes to my computer I definitely don’t have a lot of patience. One of my favorite “hacks” is the Task Manager. If Chrome, Word, or any other application becomes unresponsive, click Control+Alt+Delete and it will bring you to the Task Manager. From here, you can view all the applications your computer is currently running, and you can “end the task” of any uncooperative programs!
